There is no better way to discover a destination than to connect with the local culture, cuisine, and community. Luckily, that’s just what we did on a recent trip to Naples, Italy. We spent five days searching for food shops, pizzerías, and pastry shops. The vibe in this city was awesome — people in Naples are obsessed with food. We instantly felt like home!
If you’re on a diet, Naples is probably one of the worst places you could possibly be. Temptation is everywhere. A mouthwatering margherita pizza, neapolitan pastries are delicious too – a rum-soaked baba, or a sfogliatella stuffed with creamy ricotta.
So, here’s a list of dishes and local places you must absolutely try if you visit Naples. Just a tip: some of them might be addictive!
1. Rum Baba
A small yeast cake saturated in syrup made with hard liquor, usually rum, and sometimes filled with whipped cream or pastry cream. La Sfogliatella Mary — a must-visit place in Naples to get an authentic baba experience. You can get it to go or have it right there, either way you are not gonna be disappointed.

2. Ice Cream
Naples offers a vast selection of flavors smothered in toppings such as chocolate, wafers, nuts and red wild strawberries. With fruity flavours such as apple, melon and lemon to yoghurt, hazelnut and stracciatella – a classic Italian dish with an especially milky and creamy taste embedded with chocolate chips – Gelateria Mediterraneo of Naples definitely accomplishes all preferences.

When it comes to pasta, neapolitans are Italy’s leading capital, making the freshest, lightest of doughs to produce the smoothest of pastas. From the kneading of the dough to the placement of the parsley garnish on top, the Neapolitans have got it covered. Trattoria Ampressa Ampress’ offers, for a fair price, the most delicious fresh pastas. Typical neapolitan trattoria in the heart of the city, this place has excellent food that reflects the tradition served by a friendly and courteous staff.

4. Sea Food
Fresh oysters, lobster, shrimp, and the authentic flavors of seasonal and local produce it’s a must in Naples. Many travelers don’t realize until they visit Italy is how many of the traditional dishes are based on fish and seafood. This should come as no surprise, given that almost all of Italy’s 20 regions have a stretch of coastline along the Mediterranean, so the bounty of the sea is both fresh and, if you purchase the catch of the day directly from the docks in the morning, relatively inexpensive.
Fish Experience is a new idea of seafood restaurant in Naples. The small restaurant offers seafood specialities in a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. With tables outside, the activity is a skillful mix of fish and catering. Customers can choose the fish they want to eat and taste it cooked by skilled chefs — a real experience, where the star of every preparation is the freshness of the raw material.
The menu is rich in options, cooked simply, with a few condiments, in order to bring out from every dish the refined and delicated taste of its absolute protagonist — the fish. Some of the proposals, which varies every day according to availability, includes: mussels, octopus, prawns, calamari, anchovies, cod and fried food.

Let’s face it – parts of Naples are dirty and chaotic. If you happen to base your opinions on first impressions, hope we will change your mind. As for us, we fell in love with the city of Naples and authentic Neapolitan pizza during our visit.
If you are planning to visit Naples, you have to try Pizza Fritta (deep fried pizza) — it’s a must! Tickles the tongue, stretches the stomach and satisfies the soul. 1947 Pizza Fritta is a cozy place, typically neapolitan, with very friendly people and a fried pizza that takes you in heaven.
This pizza has a very thin dough turned bubbly in the oil and is wrapped around tomato, cheese, and meat. It’s not blitzed in the oil until crunchy and golden brown, but more gently fried like fritto misto.

We save the best for the end — without further ado, we present the world’s best pizza – L’antica Pizzeria Da Michele. Opened in 1870 by the Condurro family, L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele is an historic pizzeria located in the heart of Naples. Defined by experts and journalists as “the Sacred Temple of Pizza”, this pizza place has seen five generations of pizza masters succeed each other to carry on with the family tradition.
Because of the authentic quality that is fundamental in each and every pizza here, customers can only opt for a margherita (tomato, mozzarella, fresh basil, salt and olive oil) or marinara (tomato, garlic, oregano, olive oil). A dream come true.
